Cherry Lyons - Creative Artist

It was Devon's amazing light, the coast and the countryside that rekindled the desire to paint.  With a firm grounding in ceramics and painting with oils, the foray into the world of watercolour has been life-changing. Since retiring from a career in education,  personal aspirations have become almost entirely absorbed with creating and sharing art again.  Source material is gathered with visual stimulation from the magnificent richness of countryside or waterscapes and particularly emotive world-wide vistas by 'en plein-air' sketching and supporting photography.

" Whether it is the intensity of iridescent light on water or the powerof a wave crashing on to rocks, the sensation of textures that demand touch, a shaft of light breaking through clouds or the wilderness of our moors enveloped in dramatic climatic conditions, the dynamic but unpredictable nature of watercolours and mixed media gives me the spontaneity to capture the fleeting, atmospheric moments in time that just take your breath away.

Through painting, I have made some special friends. We share our ideas, paint together and benefit from our diverse perspectives.

I am proud to have been chairman of Devon Art Society  for four years and love sharing the experience of creating art with others. It was a privilege to trial a new painting kit for the Society for All Artists (SAA), with elderly groups in care in Torbay and with PHAB.  Painting can give so much pleasure, renewed confidence and self esteem, particularly for those with limited ability"

Cherry has exhibited successfully for several years and her work has been accepted for Art Liberating Lives at the Mall Galleries, London, Torbay Hospital Gallery, Birdwood House, Totnes, TAAG, Teignmouth and many times at Harbour House, Kingsbridge as well as  Devon Art Society, Torbay Guild of Artists, Totnes and Teignmouth Art Societies and has been accepted for the prestigious South West Acadamy of Fine and Applied Arts open exhibition in 2011 and 2012.   More exhibitions and events are planned  (See exhibitions page)  Her work has also featured in Artists and Illustrators magazine and SAA Paint magazine.

"I still enjoy maturing my own skills with the very best artists when the opportunity occurs.  I am now demonstrating Watercolour Wizardry  and Sketchbooks to the Studio for art clubs and societies and teaching practical workshops."

“My personal artistic journey is developing mixed media and watercolours suffused with rich textures and organic inclusions. I am experimenting in print-making with monoprints, drypoints and collagraphs which will add new work to the galleries in time.  The exciting opportunity of sharing my passion for teaching and demonstrating is ongoing and I hope to be tutoring art holidays soon."
